Dealing with his parents’ divorce at the age of 14, it turned his world upside down. Finding out that his Dad wasn’t the person he thought he was through growing up. This turned into misplaced angers against the wrong people in his life, including his mom. As if this wasn’t enough of a problem for him, he and his brother were involved in a bad car accident that severely affected his life. Danny had to learn how to walk and talk again in high school. It also nearly sidelined his high school football and basketball careers.

It wouldn’t be until years later, that he would be able to shed the people in his life that held him back, and meet the people that would help speed up his personal and attitude growth. Danny is a personal friend of mine who I have helped navigate his transformation.

I hope everyone and their families had a great and safe 4th of July weekend!

his dream of making something out of

8
00:00:33,290 –> 00:00:34,100
nothing

9
00:00:34,100 –> 00:00:37,790
welcome to show Danny thank you for

10
00:00:37,790 –> 00:00:41,570
on I i’m really excited for you to share
your story today at been a part of your

11
00:00:41,570 –> 00:00:44,480
story so it’s it’s extra special for me

12
00:00:44,480 –> 00:00:49,550
let’s begin by giving some background
about yourself Danny 25 years old I was

13
00:00:49,550 –> 00:00:54,290
born and raised in Pennsauken New Jersey
high school graduate a pencil in high

14
00:00:54,290 –> 00:01:00,739
school two national titles 2007 and soak
in high school football team and

15
00:01:00,739 –> 00:01:04,819
basketball team my workout part of truck
service parts warehouse

16
00:01:05,360 –> 00:01:08,660
I’ve been there for about four years and
that’s pretty much it

17
00:01:09,170 –> 00:01:14,180
so what would you say inspires you see
people have things you know the guide

18
00:01:14,180 –> 00:01:18,979
like to have it makes me a note of each
me to want to have those things and work

19
00:01:18,979 –> 00:01:24,259
hard and take care of the people that
surround me and look out for the people

20
00:01:24,259 –> 00:01:29,30
that looked out for me helped me through
my horror times and was there for me to

21
00:01:29,30 –> 00:01:30,650
celebrate my good times

22
00:01:30,650 –> 00:01:37,159
so how all this come about oh I was
younger my parents split up when I was

23
00:01:37,159 –> 00:01:44,30
kinda confused on where I wanted to go
in life i was kinda on the wrong path

24
00:01:44,30 –> 00:01:49,280
for a little while i was doing kind of
stupid petty things that’s a kid growing

25
00:01:49,280 –> 00:01:55,909
more get into trouble and when I was
about 18 19 years old I kind of realized

26
00:01:55,909 –> 00:01:58,909
that on that’s not the way to go

27
00:01:59,750 –> 00:02:05,000
no I just try to set a good example for
my family members that are younger than

28
00:02:05,000 –> 00:02:09,709
me and my friends that I grew up with
that you can do things differently and

29
00:02:09,709 –> 00:02:14,299
still have the same i can see success
that you had when you were doing the

30
00:02:14,299 –> 00:02:19,40
wrong things you can do it in a good
weigh-in do positive things with the

31
00:02:19,40 –> 00:02:26,209
people around you and that’s what I try
to do I just try to keep a positive what

32
00:02:26,209 –> 00:02:29,209
kind of struggles did you have with your
parents splitting up

33
00:02:30,130 –> 00:02:33,370
my mom and father split up

34
00:02:33,370 –> 00:02:38,110
there’s a lot of anger there like a lot
of anger and I took it out a lot on her

35
00:02:38,110 –> 00:02:42,640
cause like I really know how to handle
that type of situation

36
00:02:43,600 –> 00:02:49,239
I mean 14 years old you know the person
that I thought my father was was that

37
00:02:49,240 –> 00:02:55,660
the person is the person that he is is
nothing what I thought it was had a lot

38
00:02:55,660 –> 00:03:00,310
of anger and I struggled to deal with
that for 45 years

39
00:03:00,970 –> 00:03:07,780
it was very hard to warm figure out how
to channel that emotion to a certain

40
00:03:07,780 –> 00:03:13,60
extent that hatred sports is what it was
for me i just put all the effort I had

41
00:03:13,60 –> 00:03:16,510
in sports and try to make the best of
what I could with that

42
00:03:16,510 –> 00:03:22,359
so what is you try changing your life to
make it better for yourself when I

43
00:03:22,360 –> 00:03:26,650
played basketball in high school I
really I was really good and I really

44
00:03:26,650 –> 00:03:32,290
thought that I could on probably make it
to the NBA I was probably one of those

45
00:03:32,290 –> 00:03:36,400
kids oughta lock and don’t gotta jump
shot i got a crossover i’m going to go

46
00:03:36,400 –> 00:03:39,850
to the NBA and that didn’t happen

47
00:03:40,540 –> 00:03:44,679
no I was kind of disappointed at that
too because I made some mistakes in

48
00:03:44,680 –> 00:03:46,60
school and

49
00:03:46,60 –> 00:03:51,580
I have to go to an alternative high
school and you know I remember our home

50
00:03:51,580 –> 00:03:56,860
games you should be played at burlington
county college and my coach I was in my

51
00:03:56,860 –> 00:04:01,780
senior year and my coach said it’s
college crap you should really look at

52
00:04:01,780 –> 00:04:06,310
this kid and the scott told my coach you
don’t got time for kids i went to an

53
00:04:06,310 –> 00:04:11,950
alternative school so that was some
difficult for me like just knowing that

54
00:04:11,950 –> 00:04:16,930
that was my last year in school and that
was the game before last games that i

55
00:04:16,930 –> 00:04:24,190
was always in the back of my head and
then I got to about 19 and I’m you know

56
00:04:24,190 –> 00:04:29,590
I i just wanted to change in the people
that I was around and constantly hanging

57
00:04:29,590 –> 00:04:35,619
winning doing arm not the best things to
be doing i just wanted to change i

58
00:04:35,620 –> 00:04:38,80
wanted to be a better person

59
00:04:38,80 –> 00:04:41,859
my grandfather was sick at the time and
I wanted to make them proud I wanted to

60
00:04:41,860 –> 00:04:46,419
make my mom proud and show them that
even though I didn’t start off the best

61
00:04:46,419 –> 00:04:50,650
way that i’ll do my best to finish and
be the best man that I can be so how was

62
00:04:50,650 –> 00:04:56,950
that received by your family there we
were happy that I was finally ready to

63
00:04:56,950 –> 00:05:02,860
put that stuff past me and build on the
new person i want to say I’m a

64
00:05:02,860 –> 00:05:04,780
completely different person

65
00:05:04,780 –> 00:05:11,799
I mean a lot of me half of me is the old
me as far as seeing things from people’s

66
00:05:11,800 –> 00:05:17,169
point of views i mean i understand
people’s views and stuff and there’s

67
00:05:17,169 –> 00:05:21,729
about half of me that’s a completely new
person as far as the maturity level on

68
00:05:21,729 –> 00:05:24,130
my professionalism

69
00:05:24,130 –> 00:05:28,659
I’ve learned a lot of stuff that on i
really think that I would on learn

70
00:05:29,200 –> 00:05:34,90
overall the family was happy and proud
of me to do my mom’s very proud of me

71
00:05:34,90 –> 00:05:39,969
i’ve made accomplishments do my job and
on i just hope I’m making them proud and

72
00:05:39,970 –> 00:05:43,479
I think for the most part they are so
what steps did you take to get started

73
00:05:43,479 –> 00:05:45,550
with making these changes in your life

74
00:05:45,550 –> 00:05:48,360
first thing is people a year around

75
00:05:48,360 –> 00:05:52,800
I was younger when I was having problems
channel and my emotions are taking down

76
00:05:52,800 –> 00:05:55,919
on the people that were the last ones to
deserve it

77
00:05:56,550 –> 00:06:00,300
I’m staking it out on my mom and my
mom’s been there for me through

78
00:06:00,300 –> 00:06:05,789
everything everything I ever went 2-2
she was right there with me to old-time

79
00:06:05,789 –> 00:06:13,318
she didn’t deserve that I had to admit
that i had an anger problem and it was

80
00:06:13,319 –> 00:06:18,509
gonna take time to one work on that I’m
still working on some of those seen

81
00:06:18,509 –> 00:06:24,629
things today I had to cut off some mom
people that i was around people that I

82
00:06:24,629 –> 00:06:28,650
thought were friends that weren’t
friends people that weren’t the people

83
00:06:28,650 –> 00:06:31,229
that I wanted to be around

84
00:06:31,229 –> 00:06:36,60
I had to figure out who who loved me for
me

85
00:06:36,689 –> 00:06:43,800
we call it the falls and everybody
everything else that goes with it

86
00:06:43,800 –> 00:06:48,330
I had to realize that just because one
thing doesn’t work out there’s always

87
00:06:48,330 –> 00:06:50,99
another step

88
00:06:50,99 –> 00:06:55,110
so that’s on important that one thing
doesn’t go your way there’s no need to

89
00:06:55,110 –> 00:06:58,229
get on man and upset you can do
something else

90
00:06:58,860 –> 00:07:02,729
make your own path we call this a how do
you do it

91
00:07:02,729 –> 00:07:07,409
leave your own legacy so we’re there any
roblox that you hit when trying to do

92
00:07:07,409 –> 00:07:08,460
all this

93
00:07:08,460 –> 00:07:14,520
absolutely you know when you’re trying
to change who you are in the beginning

94
00:07:14,520 –> 00:07:20,758
it’s very difficult because it use you
could still be in some of them same

95
00:07:20,759 –> 00:07:24,70
situations where on

96
00:07:24,70 –> 00:07:30,70
you know when I was eighteen sixteen
seventeen eighteen years old that there

97
00:07:30,70 –> 00:07:35,740
was a confrontation my way to handle it
would be alright let’s fight

98
00:07:35,740 –> 00:07:40,330
now i see that’s not the way to go i
mean you were talking things out that’s

99
00:07:40,330 –> 00:07:45,280
how relationships are lost most open
most of the time mix understandings and

100
00:07:45,280 –> 00:07:49,510
things like that you need to be willing
to warm talk things out sometimes

101
00:07:49,510 –> 00:07:54,219
fighting is not always the right answer
on another broke block was maturity I

102
00:07:54,220 –> 00:07:59,920
had to mature a lot as a man and i had
to accept the hardest thing was probably

103
00:07:59,920 –> 00:08:05,260
accepting me for me I mean it was hard
for me to accept the person that I was

104
00:08:05,260 –> 00:08:10,599
with my Falls and some of them are very
hard to change and like i said earlier

105
00:08:10,600 –> 00:08:16,180
i’m still working on them i think i make
good progress on most of them you know a

106
00:08:16,180 –> 00:08:20,170
few of them i still need to work on and
hopefully I can get there

107
00:08:20,170 –> 00:08:26,710
how did you go about overcoming some of
these I’ve had good influences in my

108
00:08:26,710 –> 00:08:33,69
life my mother my grand and people like
you people like Eric you know you know

109
00:08:33,70 –> 00:08:37,330
some people that have been on
instrumental in my life and help me make

110
00:08:37,330 –> 00:08:42,820
the right decisions and grooming me in
trying to show me the way and it’s been

111
00:08:42,820 –> 00:08:49,270
very helpful to me and really want i
started to see to things that that you

112
00:08:49,270 –> 00:08:52,689
were trying to teach me and people were
trying to teach you once i really

113
00:08:52,690 –> 00:08:57,940
started taking that seriously is when I
started to see to change you know that I

114
00:08:57,940 –> 00:09:04,30
didn’t have to be person that i was i
could be the same person just a better

115
00:09:04,30 –> 00:09:05,709
more mature person

116
00:09:05,710 –> 00:09:10,000
well thank you danny thank you so I mean
there was something else that happened

117
00:09:10,000 –> 00:09:13,390
along the way you were in a car accident

118
00:09:13,390 –> 00:09:20,800
yeah that was difficult to learn to walk
again talk again doctor told me I was

119
00:09:20,800 –> 00:09:26,890
going to be able to play basketball I
said doc I’m gonna do whatever I have to

120
00:09:26,890 –> 00:09:30,860
do I want to be out there that first
game that bears game

121
00:09:30,860 –> 00:09:34,100
and he said starting at point guard
number five

122
00:09:34,100 –> 00:09:38,570
Danny Murphy I was on that floor that
was a very difficult time that I mean

123
00:09:38,570 –> 00:09:43,490
and my brother was involved in a car
accident as well you know I had to be

124
00:09:43,490 –> 00:09:48,20
strong for him and as his older brother
trying to show him you know if I can

125
00:09:48,20 –> 00:09:55,130
make it to it so can you my own my hair
your condition was a little worse than

126
00:09:55,130 –> 00:10:00,920
his had a couple of broken ribs and a
broken shoulder and i just wanted to

127
00:10:00,920 –> 00:10:05,209
show him that you can get through
anything and I didn’t I told the doctor

128
00:10:05,210 –> 00:10:11,000
i play at that game and I did squid 32
points never forget there’s a lot of

129
00:10:11,000 –> 00:10:15,620
roadblocks that I went through though I
mean when your parents split up you know

130
00:10:15,620 –> 00:10:21,350
at 14 years old you’re like well you
know how can I really deal with this and

131
00:10:21,350 –> 00:10:28,640
I just had to warm you know stick with
it learned lived and try to be the best

132
00:10:28,640 –> 00:10:34,220
person and I can be the car accident was
another that was on I wants a setback

133
00:10:34,220 –> 00:10:37,760
because it’s never about to set back
it’s all about to get back

134
00:10:38,270 –> 00:10:43,40
losing people along the way people that
you love and care about that you know

135
00:10:43,40 –> 00:10:48,439
I’ve lost friends family has been a lot
of struggles to go through and I think

136
00:10:48,440 –> 00:10:53,480
for the most part i’ve gotten through
more I’ve been strong for myself my

137
00:10:53,480 –> 00:10:59,270
family members my friends and no I hope
that they’re appreciative of that and

138
00:10:59,270 –> 00:11:03,620
there are proud to say that i was there
for him when I when I was so there’s any

139
00:11:03,620 –> 00:11:07,340
parts of your dreams so far that haven’t
quite worked out the way you planned it

140
00:11:07,340 –> 00:11:12,290
man food may wear this is hard work and
dedication pale

141
00:11:12,290 –> 00:11:17,329
I hope that’s true because i work hard
i’m dedicated to warm everything I do

142
00:11:17,330 –> 00:11:21,380
and I would say there’s anything that
hasn’t worked out but there are some

143
00:11:21,380 –> 00:11:25,820
things that I’m hoping that will
eventually work out so i would say

144
00:11:25,820 –> 00:11:28,150
everything’s okay for now and

145
00:11:28,150 –> 00:11:33,430
some things are still left unfinished so
I really couldn’t say that there’s

146
00:11:33,430 –> 00:11:38,709
nothing that hasn’t worked out yet so
Danny if you were stranded on a deserted

147
00:11:38,710 –> 00:11:42,40
island with your family what three
things would you want to have with you

148
00:11:42,40 –> 00:11:47,50
first and foremost I need me some music
a basketball court and i would have to

149
00:11:47,50 –> 00:11:51,880
bring my sneakers not okay everybody was
saying you’re not i love my Jordans

150
00:11:51,880 –> 00:11:53,680
shout out to Michael jewelry

151
00:11:53,680 –> 00:11:57,40
what are your dreams for the future look
like i’m going to be playing in a

152
00:11:57,40 –> 00:12:01,959
basketball summer league this summer I’m
gonna be on a part of a summer league

153
00:12:01,960 –> 00:12:08,350
i’m also going to be a volunteer at the
basketball can’t and you know maybe i

154
00:12:08,350 –> 00:12:12,130
can turn that into this something you
know to love the game for me is there

155
00:12:12,130 –> 00:12:13,240
still

156
00:12:13,240 –> 00:12:18,910
I love the competition that would truly
be a dream at 25 years old maybe too

157
00:12:18,910 –> 00:12:25,60
long get an opportunity to play
basketball on a more regular basis

158
00:12:25,60 –> 00:12:30,40
instead of just when I’m done working on
the weekends that would be on truly a

159
00:12:30,40 –> 00:12:34,780
dream come true because basketball is my
first love for the professional side i

160
00:12:34,780 –> 00:12:39,730
don’t know you know maybe I cannot be in
a better position maybe next year town

161
00:12:39,730 –> 00:12:45,250
you who knows to be honest Joe I really
don’t try to home say I want to do this

162
00:12:45,250 –> 00:12:51,310
at that body is time I just kinda take
every day day by day day by day

163
00:12:51,310 –> 00:12:55,30
so is there any last thoughts you’d like
to share like to thank the people that

164
00:12:55,30 –> 00:12:56,740
took the time to listen to this

165
00:12:56,740 –> 00:13:01,540
I’d like to thank you for having me like
21 give a shout-out to the other people

166
00:13:01,540 –> 00:13:05,500
that have been on here i think that’s a
cool thing the future people that you

167
00:13:05,500 –> 00:13:09,880
have on here i think i think the dreams
podcast will you success I think it’s

168
00:13:09,880 –> 00:13:14,20
something that people shouldn’t breathe
people and dreams our own could be a

169
00:13:14,20 –> 00:13:18,819
very very sensitive thing it takes a lot
of or be able to talk to people that

170
00:13:18,820 –> 00:13:24,10
they don’t real with known express
themselves until people allowed to

171
00:13:24,10 –> 00:13:30,220
people are afraid to admit what their
real dreams are there just contain with

172
00:13:30,220 –> 00:13:31,330
where they’re at

173
00:13:31,330 –> 00:13:36,230
some people are too afraid to admit that
you know I’d rather be on

174
00:13:36,230 –> 00:13:41,480
playing basketball vs. working in a
warehouse some people would think you

175
00:13:41,480 –> 00:13:43,220
know maybe I’m too old

176
00:13:43,220 –> 00:13:49,220
maybe i can do that no more but it’s
important that i think people try to one

177
00:13:49,220 –> 00:13:54,770
arm get this type of stuff out that your
dreams are real long thing and if you’re

178
00:13:54,770 –> 00:13:58,670
able to accomplish them you know you
don’t ever have to feel like you can’t

179
00:13:58,670 –> 00:14:04,160
do what something you could do if you’re
focused you can do it well then I really

180
00:14:04,160 –> 00:14:05,420
appreciate that

181
00:14:05,420 –> 00:14:13,459
that’s it’s very hard heart pink eye is
tearing up just listening to you talk in

182
00:14:13,460 –> 00:14:19,370
all honesty so is there any any website
or Facebook sore Twitter’s that you’d

183
00:14:19,370 –> 00:14:24,560
like the log now friend request me on
Facebook danny murphy i have an

184
00:14:24,560 –> 00:14:30,349
Instagram the underscore Murphy 389 I
don’t do Twitter or anything else like

185
00:14:30,350 –> 00:14:30,890
that

186
00:14:30,890 –> 00:14:34,760
well thank you so much for coming on and
sharing your story i really really

187
00:14:34,760 –> 00:14:40,40
deeply appreciate it and I i hope that
it inspires some people out there to

188

193
