From a young age David knew he wanted to be an artist. He got support from family growing up. In high school his girlfriend who later became his wife and teachers from high school, pushed him along his eventual career path. David would copy tapes and CDs from friends and he would redraw the covers by hand. One of the album covers that he redrew was Green Day’s “Dookie”.

David Senior decided to goto Tyler School of Art, which wasn’t easy for him because he had to work his way through college. Once David got out of school he aggressively searched for a job. He fought through some major road blocks in his career path, but it eventually led him to pursuing illustration on his own.

David Senior has some great advice for anyone going through lay offs, being an artist, and or creating and using a network. He also talks about not keeping a big secret from your family, like being laid off.

woman you’re knocking on your hotel
apartments today I’m interviewing AC

6
00:00:29,540 –> 00:00:32,659
living history career in design and
illustration

7
00:00:33,590 –> 00:00:36,890
welcome to the show date thanks Joe glad
to be here

8
00:00:36,890 –> 00:00:41,239
glad to have you here in the studio with
me tonight let’s get started by giving

9
00:00:41,239 –> 00:00:43,250
the audience some background about
yourself

10
00:00:43,250 –> 00:00:49,10
alright i’m a 35 years old live in south
jersey a wife and three wonderful kids

11
00:00:49,10 –> 00:00:53,599
wasn’t always from South Jersey I grew
up a little bit on the west coast and

12
00:00:53,600 –> 00:00:59,59
down south memorial over here teenager
spend my life on the east coast long

13
00:00:59,59 –> 00:01:02,690
beach island area and made my way
towards Philadelphia when I went to

14
00:01:02,690 –> 00:01:07,399
college at our school of art so what
would you say inspires you Dave a lot of

15
00:01:07,400 –> 00:01:12,950
different things family life the usual
suspects there but i think the biggest

16
00:01:12,950 –> 00:01:16,880
thing that inspires me would be other
work that I come across other designers

17
00:01:16,880 –> 00:01:21,440
that I respect other illustrators that I
respect just to see the work that they

18
00:01:21,440 –> 00:01:24,920
produce under similar circumstances or
maybe something I’ve never touched

19
00:01:24,920 –> 00:01:25,790
before

20
00:01:25,790 –> 00:01:30,350
just gets really inspiring you see a lot
with these design manuals that we have

21
00:01:30,350 –> 00:01:33,500
in the industry that just shows the
highlights the best work throughout the

22
00:01:33,500 –> 00:01:37,100
year they do different subsets of work
and it’s just great to look through

23
00:01:37,100 –> 00:01:40,189
those and just see what other people are
doing so how did you dream of becoming

24
00:01:40,189 –> 00:01:44,329
an artist in general come about it
started early on when i was in high

25
00:01:44,329 –> 00:01:48,469
school I knew that the Avenue no one to
take and even I didn’t quite know

26
00:01:48,469 –> 00:01:55,429
exactly what that was how it would turn
out i started to make plans to get there

27
00:01:55,430 –> 00:01:59,810
by choosing the school I went to just
having conversations with my art teacher

28
00:01:59,810 –> 00:02:03,979
at that age and family members so they
didn’t really know what it was either

29
00:02:03,979 –> 00:02:08,600
and I just sort of had this idea of what
it was and one of my earliest memories

30
00:02:08,600 –> 00:02:13,549
is when I would record tapes or cds from
friends I would actually redraw the

31
00:02:13,550 –> 00:02:17,60
entire cover and as i did that i was
sort of like us so this is like

32
00:02:17,60 –> 00:02:20,780
something people do and I know that that
in itself wasn’t designed but i do like

33
00:02:20,780 –> 00:02:24,680
someone put thought into this some
thought into where this image would be

34
00:02:24,680 –> 00:02:30,890
the type would be and it really opened
my eyes to the possibility of that being

35
00:02:30,890 –> 00:02:31,880
something that I

36
00:02:31,880 –> 00:02:38,150
one day do what were some of the covers
that you drew a lot of old punk bands

37
00:02:38,150 –> 00:02:42,920
many that i can’t remember the names to
one that really comes to mind is this

38
00:02:42,920 –> 00:02:48,440
band seven seconds really short songs
really fun band something listen to when

39
00:02:48,440 –> 00:02:49,520
I was a teenager

40
00:02:49,520 –> 00:02:55,220
not that I was into anymore but a lot of
fun green day’s dookie that really crazy

41
00:02:55,220 –> 00:03:00,200
cover album lots of illustration going
on their labor of love but I was a

42
00:03:00,200 –> 00:03:03,79
teenager and I loved it and it was a lot
of fun

43
00:03:03,80 –> 00:03:06,830
Nirvana just whatever was sort of big at
the time and that I was getting my hands

44
00:03:06,830 –> 00:03:11,60
on how was your dream received by your
family that they were supportive my

45
00:03:11,60 –> 00:03:15,950
grandparents for sure always commented
on just the different path i was taking

46
00:03:15,950 –> 00:03:19,700
and they’re a big part of my life
throughout those formative years and

47
00:03:19,700 –> 00:03:24,470
really helped push me along as far as my
artistic endeavors and where I was going

48
00:03:24,470 –> 00:03:28,700
with that my wife who actually met way
back in high school was also very

49
00:03:28,700 –> 00:03:32,359
supportive she’s always been supportive
to this day of the the work that I do

50
00:03:32,360 –> 00:03:36,350
through that time in high school was
really great to just see that support

51
00:03:36,350 –> 00:03:40,340
and just have her push me along you know
when when you’re in the creative field

52
00:03:40,340 –> 00:03:44,720
there is that opportunity and
possibility for doubts to creep in but

53
00:03:44,720 –> 00:03:48,80
throughout those moments she was there
to just push me along and let me know

54
00:03:48,80 –> 00:03:50,180
that I had it in me and I could do it

55
00:03:50,180 –> 00:03:53,660
that was just a huge help and huge
support also some teachers in high

56
00:03:53,660 –> 00:03:57,680
school early on really pushed me along
just offering a lot of advice and

57
00:03:57,680 –> 00:04:01,940
support and all that combined I mean
really helped shaped who i became and

58
00:04:01,940 –> 00:04:08,30
and how I pursued my my dream in my
vision so let’s get into what steps you

59
00:04:08,30 –> 00:04:13,730
took to get started as an artist and
then let’s go into what steps you took

60
00:04:13,730 –> 00:04:15,470
to make it a career

61
00:04:15,470 –> 00:04:21,738
the first step was going to art school I
want to tyler school of art primarily

62
00:04:21,738 –> 00:04:26,000
because my high school art teacher came
from there and spoke really highly other

63
00:04:26,000 –> 00:04:30,410
but aside from that I did a lot of
research to before making my decision

64
00:04:30,410 –> 00:04:35,90
look at all the local schools and really
knew that that was a place that I i

65
00:04:35,90 –> 00:04:41,179
wanted to pursue and lucky enough to get
accepted there and did a lot to work my

66
00:04:41,180 –> 00:04:44,000
way through college wasn’t easy but it
was something that

67
00:04:44,000 –> 00:04:47,360
I was passionate about and was very
rewarding and worthwhile

68
00:04:47,870 –> 00:04:51,500
so that’s early on where I got my start
as I knew that that’s right needed to go

69
00:04:51,500 –> 00:04:55,70
and I just knew throughout the whole
time that to get where I want to be

70
00:04:55,70 –> 00:04:59,390
post-college I needed to get the
education at that time to be able to

71
00:04:59,390 –> 00:05:03,590
follow that dream from there I just
right out of school was really

72
00:05:03,590 –> 00:05:07,940
aggressive and looking for work and
looking to follow that career path and

73
00:05:07,940 –> 00:05:12,530
and was lucky enough to have a some
breaks along the way with the networking

74
00:05:12,530 –> 00:05:16,460
or just being at the right place right
time so we’re there any roblox so you

75
00:05:16,460 –> 00:05:19,310
hit along the way to definitely name a
few

76
00:05:19,310 –> 00:05:22,760
the two that come to mind are when I got
laid off their a turning point in my

77
00:05:22,760 –> 00:05:23,690
life

78
00:05:23,690 –> 00:05:28,370
the first job that check out of school
the fun job really opened my eyes to the

79
00:05:28,370 –> 00:05:32,540
real world of how to work in the
creative field whose exclusively in the

80
00:05:32,540 –> 00:05:35,990
design world should say but it didn’t
didn’t last that long

81
00:05:35,990 –> 00:05:39,650
within six months there was a big
layoffs in the company i was one of them

82
00:05:39,650 –> 00:05:44,510
when i was getting married soon so it
was a scary moment but things work out

83
00:05:44,510 –> 00:05:49,729
and the next job I went to was
Philadelphia Magazine and I was ended up

84
00:05:49,729 –> 00:05:53,930
being there for five years and that led
to a lot of different things but some my

85
00:05:53,930 –> 00:05:58,550
most rewarding experiences there were
keen on photo shoots directing them

86
00:05:58,550 –> 00:06:02,600
working with photographers just being
on-site or directing them remotely and

87
00:06:02,600 –> 00:06:08,30
also working with illustrators that was
the highlight of every month was finding

88
00:06:08,30 –> 00:06:11,750
which illustrators I can work with
commissioning the illustrations are

89
00:06:11,750 –> 00:06:15,770
directing them working back and forth
just that whole collaboration process

90
00:06:15,770 –> 00:06:18,859
was so rewarding just so much fun

91
00:06:18,860 –> 00:06:23,450
from my perspective and actually led me
into wanting to pursue illustration on

92
00:06:23,450 –> 00:06:26,450
my own as well how did you overcome
being laid off

93
00:06:28,550 –> 00:06:33,110
well that’s a good question

94
00:06:33,680 –> 00:06:39,110
I I was definitely scared did it the
wrong way the first time did mention I

95
00:06:39,110 –> 00:06:41,450
was laid off twice but the first time I
got laid off

96
00:06:41,450 –> 00:06:45,80
I didn’t tell anyone and I don’t
recommend that we were getting married

97
00:06:45,80 –> 00:06:49,760
like i said and more often i thought the
best idea would be to keep it a secret

98
00:06:49,760 –> 00:06:56,690
and that was nerve-racking but it for me
it worked out because my next job

99
00:06:57,190 –> 00:07:01,570
I’m pretty quick and was a much better
job and worked out but still I was like

100
00:07:01,570 –> 00:07:03,969
that learning experience for sure

101
00:07:03,970 –> 00:07:09,160
never do that again so another roadblock
it was a after a number of years at the

102
00:07:09,160 –> 00:07:12,550
magazine magazine industry took a hit
and there’s a lot of layoffs there as

103
00:07:12,550 –> 00:07:17,830
well and I got laid off there and that
was just after we had our first child so

104
00:07:17,830 –> 00:07:19,930
again it was a turning point in our life

105
00:07:19,930 –> 00:07:25,930
my wife had just resigned and now we’re
facing zero income so it was again a

106
00:07:25,930 –> 00:07:29,950
scary moment but one that I knew I can
get through and I immediately contacted

107
00:07:29,950 –> 00:07:36,880
my network that’s one of the biggest
things I’ve been able to overcome the

108
00:07:36,880 –> 00:07:41,140
fear of is using a network of people
always felt I had to do it alone

109
00:07:41,830 –> 00:07:46,120
I always felt like that was sort of an
incorrect way to go about it but it’s

110
00:07:46,120 –> 00:07:49,720
exactly the opposite your network of
friends and people that you know

111
00:07:49,720 –> 00:07:55,480
business partners is is just it’s
amazing it’s what helps everything work

112
00:07:55,480 –> 00:08:00,370
out and that landed me another job after
a few freelance moments so that was a

113
00:08:00,370 –> 00:08:04,570
just a huge benefit as well and that
time we did it right we were keeping

114
00:08:04,570 –> 00:08:05,680
anything secret

115
00:08:05,680 –> 00:08:08,410
it was great because the family was
supportive and that was just really

116
00:08:08,410 –> 00:08:13,600
reassuring that the extended family
doors understanding and supportive and

117
00:08:13,600 –> 00:08:15,340
there wasn’t any shame in that

118
00:08:15,340 –> 00:08:19,690
yeah it’s gonna be rough to be laid off
especially facing zero income the mental

119
00:08:19,690 –> 00:08:24,100
aspect of that is it’s probably a
hundred times more difficult to deal

120
00:08:24,100 –> 00:08:26,410
with than the monetary aspect

121
00:08:26,410 –> 00:08:30,280
yeah for sure was i agree just a lot of
things to have to work through once all

122
00:08:30,280 –> 00:08:33,968
that support from the family was there
it was pretty easy to overcome and just

123
00:08:33,969 –> 00:08:35,950
to push forward and do it quickly

124
00:08:35,950 –> 00:08:39,580
you know sometimes those things work out
it didn’t work out into a much better

125
00:08:39,580 –> 00:08:44,380
job which then that job led into a much
better job and as you grow and as you

126
00:08:44,380 –> 00:08:48,970
get in your career those things just
start to unfold and unravel before you

127
00:08:48,970 –> 00:08:52,120
so there’s been a part of your dream
that haven’t quite worked out yet

128
00:08:52,120 –> 00:08:55,960
yeah I would love to just work for
myself that’s just always been a dream

129
00:08:55,960 –> 00:09:01,000
of mine to have my own clients have my
own schedule innocence and be able to

130
00:09:01,000 –> 00:09:05,80
work on the things that really inspire
me be able to be selective on the work

131
00:09:05,80 –> 00:09:07,839
that they do thats it’s just a dream

132
00:09:07,839 –> 00:09:09,40
it’s something that

133
00:09:09,40 –> 00:09:13,480
helps motivate me as i’m doing the work
I’m doing now I know that it’s a goal

134
00:09:13,480 –> 00:09:19,930
that I can one day reach and it’s you
know it’s an exciting time because I in

135
00:09:19,930 –> 00:09:24,609
my day job that I have I’m doing a some
good work but outside of that i’m doing

136
00:09:24,610 –> 00:09:28,990
work for those things that inspired me
i’m picking up clients i’m working for

137
00:09:28,990 –> 00:09:33,819
family and friends and it’s good to see
that start to gain momentum and start to

138
00:09:33,819 –> 00:09:37,959
build up some kind of recognition before
the show we were looking at some of your

139
00:09:37,959 –> 00:09:43,268
art on your website you told me that
you’ve done work for rolling stone italy

140
00:09:43,269 –> 00:09:46,600
and as well as some others could you go
over some of that

141
00:09:46,600 –> 00:09:50,290
yeah for sure there’s sort of two
avenues in my life one of them is just

142
00:09:50,290 –> 00:09:55,509
strictly graphic design work and one is
illustration work and like I said with

143
00:09:55,509 –> 00:09:59,290
the magazine I started realizing that
illustration was something i wanted to

144
00:09:59,290 –> 00:10:07,149
pursue and got into that first I was
doing that solo but within a few years i

145
00:10:07,149 –> 00:10:10,149
don’t remember exactly when I think it’s
probably been six years now its

146
00:10:10,149 –> 00:10:15,130
contacted by a illustration rep and it
paid off for me it’s just the situation

147
00:10:15,130 –> 00:10:16,420
I was in

148
00:10:16,420 –> 00:10:19,990
it was great to have someone be able to
handle all the contract end of things

149
00:10:19,990 –> 00:10:24,910
and and start finding work for me beyond
the scope of what i was getting and that

150
00:10:24,910 –> 00:10:30,40
landed me jobs like Rolling Stone italy
and fortune magazine a lot of really big

151
00:10:30,40 –> 00:10:34,899
magazines boston globe as well
newspapers and stuff and that’s been

152
00:10:34,899 –> 00:10:39,579
great it’s been jobs that i love the
they’re highly conceptual get to read

153
00:10:39,579 –> 00:10:42,880
through the articles read the stories
work with the art directors on that in a

154
00:10:42,880 –> 00:10:46,839
bit now foot that roll a little bit and
now I’m the illustrator working with the

155
00:10:46,839 –> 00:10:52,000
creative directors and the art directors
and that process to me is just it’s a

156
00:10:52,000 –> 00:10:56,500
ton of fun just coming up with the idea
than seeing it come to life and then

157
00:10:56,500 –> 00:11:00,639
seemed in print your own on the web so
that’s a different Avenue of my life but

158
00:11:00,639 –> 00:11:05,139
the two really cross over a lot there’s
a lot of the same kind of conceptual

159
00:11:05,139 –> 00:11:09,639
thinking the same approach that I give
to both my design work in illustration

160
00:11:09,639 –> 00:11:14,259
work well i mean i-i love your work i
think it’s great you did work for for

161
00:11:14,259 –> 00:11:18,730
adventure tutorial which I really
appreciate both the t-shirts and the

162
00:11:18,730 –> 00:11:20,920
album touching up the artwork that

163
00:11:20,920 –> 00:11:25,779
Matt Lewis put together for it and I
can’t thank you enough for the head with

164
00:11:25,779 –> 00:11:29,920
course so if you were stranded on a
deserted on with your family what three

165
00:11:29,920 –> 00:11:34,329
things would you want to have with you
think your guitar would have to be one

166
00:11:34,329 –> 00:11:36,399
family loves music

167
00:11:36,399 –> 00:11:41,19
I can play some guitar my girls can play
some guitar their little young but

168
00:11:41,19 –> 00:11:46,89
they’re learning a knife you just
arrived think that would be a good one

169
00:11:46,89 –> 00:11:52,000
and sketchbook to keep the memories that
wasn’t very good less i think ya are

170
00:11:52,000 –> 00:11:55,000
practical part keepsakes

171
00:11:55,630 –> 00:11:59,50
so what are your dreams for the future
look like okay i want to touch on a

172
00:11:59,50 –> 00:12:04,359
little earlier i’d love to be able to
start to transition my career and two

173
00:12:04,360 –> 00:12:09,760
more of a hybrid of my illustration of
my design coming together under one roof

174
00:12:09,760 –> 00:12:16,810
where I’m sort of my own boss and taking
some jobs that I’m really passionate

175
00:12:16,810 –> 00:12:21,130
about and doing is the best work that I
can do

176
00:12:21,130 –> 00:12:26,19
yeah it’s really tough especially in the
art market it’s so competitive and

177
00:12:26,19 –> 00:12:31,360
there’s so many people i mean schools
like the artist toots of wherever you’re

178
00:12:31,360 –> 00:12:38,79
from are just cranking out students that
they’re bringing in it’s got its got

179
00:12:38,79 –> 00:12:39,910
muddy the water for you

180
00:12:39,910 –> 00:12:45,670
yes and no there’s a handful of people i
believe that really pursue that same

181
00:12:45,670 –> 00:12:49,180
kind of dream that i do where you’re
working for yourself but there’s a lot

182
00:12:49,180 –> 00:12:53,529
of agencies there’s a lot of Design
Studios out there that are soaking those

183
00:12:53,529 –> 00:12:59,110
young town stop those those kids that
are fresh into the industry and there’s

184
00:12:59,110 –> 00:13:03,339
a lot of good work that’s a being
pursued in those environments as well

185
00:13:03,339 –> 00:13:08,740
and that’s like environment that I men
currently and while i do enjoy it it’s

186
00:13:08,740 –> 00:13:11,350
not my end passion

187
00:13:11,350 –> 00:13:15,220
let’s help me get there and there’s some
people who love to make a career that I

188
00:13:15,220 –> 00:13:18,339
think there’s definitely enough of it to
go around it is competitive though

189
00:13:18,339 –> 00:13:21,459
that’s not to say that it’s not
competitive it’s a highly competitive

190
00:13:21,459 –> 00:13:25,250
field but it’s also a very encouraging
one

191
00:13:25,250 –> 00:13:30,170
I believe a lot of the industry the
creative industry really likes to share

192
00:13:30,170 –> 00:13:34,849
a lot of knowledge websites like dribble
really reinforce that where people are

193
00:13:34,850 –> 00:13:39,50
just showing the work they do and
getting feedback on it and really just

194
00:13:39,50 –> 00:13:44,270
inspiring and encouraging others to to
do as good of work as as they can and

195
00:13:44,270 –> 00:13:48,920
i’m really not to settle for doing some
partner work and that’s I think what’s

196
00:13:48,920 –> 00:13:52,790
great about the creative field as
there’s just a lot of camaraderie there

197
00:13:52,790 –> 00:13:57,230
well do you have any last thoughts to
share you have my last thoughts would be

198
00:13:57,230 –> 00:14:00,680
some advice to do not be afraid of

199
00:14:00,680 –> 00:14:04,939
following that dream to not be fearful
and let that dictate where you go I

200
00:14:04,940 –> 00:14:10,460
learned early on about myself i should
say i went later on that early on about

201
00:14:10,460 –> 00:14:16,10
myself i was very fearful and I was
afraid of making mistakes are afraid of

202
00:14:16,10 –> 00:14:20,630
doing something wrong and then the
creative field that’s that’s going to

203
00:14:20,630 –> 00:14:24,650
limit you and so if you’re someone
that’s pursuing that or you know

204
00:14:24,650 –> 00:14:29,60
anything i would say that this would
hold true fours is don’t let that fear

205
00:14:29,60 –> 00:14:33,619
stop you from what you’re doing and and
know that it’s totally fine to make

206
00:14:33,620 –> 00:14:38,240
mistakes you fall flat on your face it’s
completely fine you just get back up and

207
00:14:38,240 –> 00:14:42,410
and you do it again and really there’s
no harm is going to come of that once I

208
00:14:42,410 –> 00:14:47,360
sort of learned that through experience
and learning it really the hard way but

209
00:14:47,360 –> 00:14:52,130
I feel like I’ve started to gain a lot
more momentum a lot quicker because it’s

210
00:14:52,130 –> 00:14:57,80
been helpful to just know that this is
this process is enjoyable and that’s how

211
00:14:57,80 –> 00:15:00,920
I view it’s just something I enjoy to do
and it makes it that much more fun

212
00:15:00,920 –> 00:15:05,750
so before we go is there any websites or
Facebook pages twitter handles you’d

213
00:15:05,750 –> 00:15:06,650
like to share

214
