Ryan found his love of sports led to him to ECHL (AA Minor League Hockey)!
Connect with Ryan Crelin!
Ryan Crelin knew from a young age that he wanted to be involved with sports some how. When it was time to goto college, he found himself at Seton Hall University in New Jersey (his home state). While at Seton Hall he studied to be in sports management.
Growing up his dad owned a family business, but Ryan’s dad wanted him to go and live out his own dreams instead of staying in the family business. So Ryan found a lot of encouragement from his family for pursuing his dreams of managing in the sports arena.
He was lucky enough to be recommended to take an internship at the ECHL. Even though the location for it was down in Princeton, New Jersey, Ryan took the position two hours away and drove four times a week. Many times he wasn’t sure if he would have enough gas money to get down there, but he pressed on.
Eventually Ryan saw the light at end of the tunnel working at the ECHL main office, and all of his hard work and endless hours were starting to pay off. He then continued to press with his MBA from Rutgers University.
Ryan encourages everyone to never stop learning and educating yourself. Even when people want to look at you and judge, you show that you have the knowledge to make them respect you.
Ryan is a good friend of mine, and I am really happy that he decided to come on Dreamers Podcast to share his story. One thing I admire about him is the fact that he isn’t afraid to be himself and not worry about what other people think.
As of Monday evening, Dreamers Podcast has been taken off of iTune’s New and Noteworthy. The show continues to grow though, and I can’t thank all of my listeners enough! Please keep the awesome emails, and reviews coming!

right yeah we got it
18
00:01:16,300 –> 00:01:20,140
who is living his dream through minor
league hockey
19
00:01:20,860 –> 00:01:25,000
welcome to the show Ryan show thanks for
coming on I really appreciate you coming
20
00:01:25,000 –> 00:01:27,580
in on this early morning
21
00:01:27,580 –> 00:01:31,60
yeah not a problem at all let’s get
started by giving some background about
22
00:01:31,60 –> 00:01:31,930
yourself
23
00:01:31,930 –> 00:01:35,950
well I’m new journey born and raised in
town called Middletown but that
24
00:01:35,950 –> 00:01:40,150
opportunity to go elsewhere but who kind
of home-based and fortunate enough to
25
00:01:40,150 –> 00:01:44,830
find a job that I enjoy close to home
and my family my friends are all there
26
00:01:44,830 –> 00:01:46,420
and been there ever since
27
00:01:46,420 –> 00:01:49,960
so what would you say inspires you i
would say a lot of different things but
28
00:01:49,960 –> 00:01:55,780
on a on a day-to-day basis you know I
actually enjoy working i like the fruits
29
00:01:55,780 –> 00:01:59,770
of the labor and seeing what it’s born
out of it in the hockey world that could
30
00:01:59,770 –> 00:02:03,820
be a game or an event or a big meeting
31
00:02:03,820 –> 00:02:10,239
I like to work put in the time and then
she that all play itself out if you go
32
00:02:10,240 –> 00:02:15,10
to the rink and there’s five six
thousand people there to watch game and
33
00:02:15,10 –> 00:02:19,630
you were behind the seams to make it all
happen i find that very rewarding and
34
00:02:19,630 –> 00:02:25,870
that’s kind of what inspires be Peter I
grew up in a house that Roche and driven
35
00:02:25,870 –> 00:02:31,30
to work for work I i guess its genetic I
don’t know but we actually enjoy it
36
00:02:31,30 –> 00:02:36,400
some people don’t like work we love to
work and so it’s always nice though when
37
00:02:36,400 –> 00:02:39,910
at the end of that work you can see the
fruits of your labor so how did you
38
00:02:39,910 –> 00:02:45,70
dream come about you wanting to work in
multiple sports in general and then
39
00:02:45,70 –> 00:02:51,40
eventually moving on to mana leak sports
well growing up it always been a fan of
40
00:02:51,40 –> 00:02:55,870
all sports played everything I enjoy
watching all different types of sports
41
00:02:55,870 –> 00:02:59,980
and going through high school one day I
just decided that’s kind of what I
42
00:02:59,980 –> 00:03:06,130
wanted to do and started looking up the
route to go found a sport management
43
00:03:06,130 –> 00:03:10,60
program at his house in a business
school at Seton Hall University in New
44
00:03:10,60 –> 00:03:15,850
Jersey school got into the program what
went for years their loved it played
45
00:03:15,850 –> 00:03:19,900
hockey their hockey was kinda my means
for growing up and
46
00:03:19,900 –> 00:03:26,170
my senior year a opportunity was folded
to me for my visor potentially work for
47
00:03:26,170 –> 00:03:31,30
the ECHL which is minor league double
play hockey a former senior graduate was
48
00:03:31,30 –> 00:03:36,790
working there was looking for an
internal it was no pay and long hours at
49
00:03:36,790 –> 00:03:41,439
that’s driving an hour each way to get
there but i decided to take it and it
50
00:03:41,439 –> 00:03:45,430
was grueling but I enjoyed it and it
kind of got my foot in the door and
51
00:03:45,430 –> 00:03:51,40
therefore the past pretty much decade at
this point so sometimes it’s just on a
52
00:03:51,40 –> 00:03:55,929
whim an opportunity came along I jumped
at it took it and it worked out
53
00:03:55,930 –> 00:03:59,980
you’ve told me that story before and you
had mentioned at times you didn’t even
54
00:03:59,980 –> 00:04:03,310
have gas money to make the trip
55
00:04:03,310 –> 00:04:09,489
yeah i mean not the intern world is
usually non-pay fine it’s the nature of
56
00:04:09,489 –> 00:04:14,560
the piece but i was driving two hours
each way three or four times a week and
57
00:04:14,560 –> 00:04:19,660
my college budget so it certainly wasn’t
easy but if you find a way to do it and
58
00:04:19,660 –> 00:04:23,470
it worked hard and show yourself you
know things do work out yeah they
59
00:04:23,470 –> 00:04:28,389
definitely do and and in your case they
very much did you share your position
60
00:04:28,389 –> 00:04:32,470
that you’ve worked your way up to now my
current title is senior vice president
61
00:04:32,470 –> 00:04:37,870
of business operations so abroad title
by it’s a it’s a great title it allows
62
00:04:37,870 –> 00:04:40,90
me to get my hands into everything
63
00:04:40,90 –> 00:04:46,900
the the monitor I was just where 40
different hats and we get to explore all
64
00:04:46,900 –> 00:04:50,919
realms of the business from the hockey
side to the tickets I’d response I’d to
65
00:04:50,919 –> 00:04:55,990
the Digital side it’s really cool so I I
enjoy it very much so how is your dream
66
00:04:55,990 –> 00:04:59,169
received by your family when you told
them that you wanted to go into sports
67
00:04:59,169 –> 00:05:03,940
management to be honest I think they
just said yet absolutely go ahead and
68
00:05:03,940 –> 00:05:06,940
run with it my my parents never went to
college
69
00:05:07,630 –> 00:05:11,680
my dad’s an entrepreneur owns his own
business she actually never really
70
00:05:11,680 –> 00:05:16,240
wanted me to get into the business I
wanted me to go to school and do
71
00:05:16,240 –> 00:05:21,610
something different and it worked out
and that’s that’s exactly what i did i
72
00:05:21,610 –> 00:05:26,500
guess i could go in that business but he
never wanted me to encourage me to go
73
00:05:26,500 –> 00:05:27,159
elsewhere
74
00:05:27,159 –> 00:05:30,370
follow my dreams and that’s kind of what
I’m doing so what steps did you take to
75
00:05:30,370 –> 00:05:32,650
get started in sports management
76
00:05:32,650 –> 00:05:33,320
yeah
77
00:05:33,320 –> 00:05:37,159
couple different things one you know I
went and found a sport management
78
00:05:37,160 –> 00:05:43,40
programs specifically what I wanted to
being however that the key really is
79
00:05:43,40 –> 00:05:46,400
that it was housing a business school at
the end of the day
80
00:05:46,400 –> 00:05:50,479
hockey is a business and you need a
business background so i would encourage
81
00:05:50,480 –> 00:05:55,550
anyone who’s interested in the field to
make that as kind of a basis for the
82
00:05:55,550 –> 00:06:02,30
platform of their education to get a
business education once i went school
83
00:06:02,30 –> 00:06:06,500
for for management and business and got
that basis and you know did some
84
00:06:06,500 –> 00:06:11,60
extracurriculars trippin towards that as
well transport management club we did
85
00:06:11,60 –> 00:06:15,80
events on the side you get event
management planning through doing things
86
00:06:15,80 –> 00:06:18,320
such as that and then like I said
earlier I got my foot in the door with
87
00:06:18,320 –> 00:06:23,540
the ECHL I didn’t stop there though
either after two years at the ECHL I was
88
00:06:23,540 –> 00:06:28,610
still working but I went and got my MBA
at Rutgers University another jersey
89
00:06:28,610 –> 00:06:33,230
school so dimensioned I’m jersey
through-and-through but never stop
90
00:06:33,230 –> 00:06:37,370
learning never stops and educating
yourself you know it was hard work
91
00:06:37,370 –> 00:06:41,750
working full-time and going to school at
night not a lot of sweet and a lot of
92
00:06:41,750 –> 00:06:44,540
running around but once again in the end
it
93
00:06:44,540 –> 00:06:47,840
it’s worth it so what roblox you get
along the way you know there’s always
94
00:06:47,840 –> 00:06:54,80
little things and at the same time to I
will say this i was fortunate to get my
95
00:06:54,80 –> 00:06:57,260
foot in the door and have the
opportunity presented itself
96
00:06:57,260 –> 00:07:03,200
one of the things i encourage early on
when I was young and I look young and in
97
00:07:03,200 –> 00:07:08,539
the business world you know you have to
earn your respect and for a long time I
98
00:07:08,540 –> 00:07:14,660
was treated like a kid at least to start
once I was able to introduce myself and
99
00:07:14,660 –> 00:07:18,650
speak the language and talk to people i
was able to break down those barriers
100
00:07:18,650 –> 00:07:23,450
and earn their respect but it was kind
of comical to be quite honest in terms
101
00:07:23,450 –> 00:07:27,20
of the values of just getting people to
respect you and kind of her in your
102
00:07:27,20 –> 00:07:27,830
place
103
00:07:27,830 –> 00:07:30,770
you know you’re going to experience that
in any job especially when you’re first
104
00:07:30,770 –> 00:07:34,789
starting out coming out of college but
kind of roll with the punches and go
105
00:07:34,790 –> 00:07:38,600
from there are any specific steps you
took to overcome those like you said
106
00:07:38,600 –> 00:07:42,440
getting in front of people and speaking
the language i mean that’s not always
107
00:07:42,440 –> 00:07:46,700
the easiest especially if some people
choose to judge you right off the gate
108
00:07:46,700 –> 00:07:51,80
yeah and sometimes you don’t even know
the language right listen I wasn’t born
109
00:07:51,80 –> 00:07:55,460
with all the answers and not through I
still not have all the answers but if I
110
00:07:55,460 –> 00:07:59,930
don’t know something i take the time to
educate myself on it and read up on it
111
00:07:59,930 –> 00:08:06,230
and learn it this way going back in i
can put myself into the conversation in
112
00:08:06,230 –> 00:08:11,60
kind of relate to people and and prove
that i know what i’m talking about so I
113
00:08:11,60 –> 00:08:15,380
i would say just knowing the situation
before you get into it
114
00:08:15,380 –> 00:08:19,730
educating yourself on it being able to
have the conversation and the other
115
00:08:19,730 –> 00:08:23,810
thing too is not being afraid to ask
questions if you don’t know ask the
116
00:08:23,810 –> 00:08:27,890
question because which I’ve never had a
problem with my entire life I probably
117
00:08:27,890 –> 00:08:32,630
ask too many questions but if you don’t
know and just kind of wing it
118
00:08:32,630 –> 00:08:37,309
it can backfire pretty quickly yes
somebody’s detector will be going off on
119
00:08:37,309 –> 00:08:43,400
you i’m sure yeah yeah exactly i mean it
to me it’s better to have the facts and
120
00:08:43,400 –> 00:08:48,350
doing analysis based on the fact other
than just kinda guessing so are there
121
00:08:48,350 –> 00:08:50,690
any parts you dream that haven’t quite
worked out yet
122
00:08:50,690 –> 00:08:55,430
you know I don’t know I personally
always want to aspire to be bigger and
123
00:08:55,430 –> 00:09:01,189
better in a take on new challenges and
you know i don’t think the ECHL is
124
00:09:01,190 –> 00:09:05,540
necessarily the final destination for me
but a good destination for now as I
125
00:09:05,540 –> 00:09:10,130
continued a to grow and learn and I wait
for the next opportunity to present
126
00:09:10,130 –> 00:09:14,900
itself and just kind of continue to move
up the ladder whether within the ECHL or
127
00:09:14,900 –> 00:09:19,490
within the hockey world or in a sport
world in general your hockey was my
128
00:09:19,490 –> 00:09:24,440
go-to and use my favorite sport bars on
very fortunate to have landed in that
129
00:09:24,440 –> 00:09:29,180
but the sports business is similar
across all sports so you know you wait
130
00:09:29,180 –> 00:09:33,349
for the next opportunity and kind of
grow from there the one thing you know
131
00:09:33,350 –> 00:09:36,980
when you’re following your dreams no
one’s gonna hand it to you so you’ve got
132
00:09:36,980 –> 00:09:42,170
to position yourself and wait for the
right opportunity and a no 12 pounds and
133
00:09:42,170 –> 00:09:47,329
you don’t know when exactly that will be
but you just continue waiting in one day
134
00:09:47,330 –> 00:09:50,930
of the show up on your doorstep I’ve
personally had those stories I’ve seen
135
00:09:50,930 –> 00:09:55,640
it out with friends and co-workers you
know just out of the blue not purity
136
00:09:55,640 –> 00:09:57,410
opens up and you jump on it
137
00:09:57,410 –> 00:10:00,350
yeah definitely gotta know when the
pound sits like
138
00:10:00,350 –> 00:10:06,320
one part luck one part instinct yeah
yeah I mean you gotta put yourself in
139
00:10:06,320 –> 00:10:11,000
the position and you know kind of make
your own lock but at the same time it’s
140
00:10:11,000 –> 00:10:15,320
not just the same I mean you’re trying
to move up in a corporation or to a
141
00:10:15,320 –> 00:10:19,880
specific entity someone’s gotta leave
usually unless they’re creating a new
142
00:10:19,880 –> 00:10:20,840
position
143
00:10:20,840 –> 00:10:25,670
the key is to put yourself behind in the
visible spectrum of whatever hiring for
144
00:10:25,670 –> 00:10:29,750
that position and said you know who
would be great for this so its up
145
00:10:29,750 –> 00:10:34,220
yeah definitely so if you were stranded
on a deserted on with your family
146
00:10:34,220 –> 00:10:37,820
what three things would you want to have
with you this is probably terrible but
147
00:10:37,820 –> 00:10:43,400
definitely television it probably drive
my family nuts but I the TV is kind of
148
00:10:43,400 –> 00:10:48,560
my source for everything from news to
sports to education I grew up with it
149
00:10:48,560 –> 00:10:54,349
and I i use it as a formative tool for
current events and history and science
150
00:10:54,350 –> 00:11:00,80
and you name it so TV would probably be
number one and my wife would probably
151
00:11:00,80 –> 00:11:06,560
break it within the first 20 seconds
probably ought curing I and associated
152
00:11:06,560 –> 00:11:11,449
equipment just a play i love the sport
been playing since I was six or seven
153
00:11:11,450 –> 00:11:16,790
years old still play to this day and I
find it’s a great way not only for
154
00:11:16,790 –> 00:11:22,40
exercise but just to get away you know
if you give me a stick pair of skates in
155
00:11:22,40 –> 00:11:22,939
the park
156
00:11:22,940 –> 00:11:27,380
I could spend all day out there and I
remember growing up spending all day out
157
00:11:27,380 –> 00:11:32,390
there and how much fun he was so I think
that would be number two number three
158
00:11:33,50 –> 00:11:38,89
maybe a nice kitchen so we cook and have
nice food food is my week this I enjoy
159
00:11:38,90 –> 00:11:43,70
good food good grill and just maybe a
kegerator in the kitchen as well to
160
00:11:43,70 –> 00:11:50,300
explain a little more in depth with the
ECHL is exactly sure the HL is a 21 team
161
00:11:50,300 –> 00:11:55,939
double a minor league hockey league we
have teams as far north as Anchorage
162
00:11:55,940 –> 00:12:01,910
Alaska as far south that is for lot of
their Florida and 21 teams spread out
163
00:12:01,910 –> 00:12:07,10
across the country in between our teams
are affiliated with both the American
164
00:12:07,10 –> 00:12:11,840
Hockey League and the National Hockey
League as a naturally work kind of the
165
00:12:11,840 –> 00:12:13,970
double-a the American auctioneers
166
00:12:13,970 –> 00:12:19,490
with the triple a and then the NHL is
major pro so a lot of our players have
167
00:12:19,490 –> 00:12:24,889
moved on to those leagues and our teams
are affiliated with respective teams in
168
00:12:24,889 –> 00:12:29,660
those leagues kind of development
channels that help players grow their
169
00:12:29,660 –> 00:12:34,819
game and move up the ranks so is their
favorite memory like to share over the
170
00:12:34,819 –> 00:12:40,40
course of a decade working with the ECHL
haha that’s a great question let lots of
171
00:12:40,40 –> 00:12:45,410
good ones i say this for five years ago
after one of our all-star games in
172
00:12:45,410 –> 00:12:51,230
Southern California a representative of
reebok CCM hockey and I you have become
173
00:12:51,230 –> 00:12:56,420
very good friends over the years decided
we were going to visit a host of ECHL
174
00:12:56,420 –> 00:13:01,189
teams throughout the last now normally
you do that flying from spot spot but we
175
00:13:01,189 –> 00:13:06,230
decided that we were going to rent an RV
and go visit the teens from spot spot
176
00:13:06,230 –> 00:13:11,959
and we started the trip after the night
of our officer game and we had our
177
00:13:11,959 –> 00:13:16,430
championship trophy as well as the
Stanley Cup on the RV with us which was
178
00:13:16,430 –> 00:13:20,719
just got no made for great photo op you
know we had a great time that night and
179
00:13:20,720 –> 00:13:24,889
then we set out on our adventure and you
know I got to travel the western part of
180
00:13:24,889 –> 00:13:30,319
the United States in an RV and she
thinks that you know i never thought i’d
181
00:13:30,319 –> 00:13:35,540
see and just trying to hit the open road
enjoy all working at the same time so
182
00:13:35,540 –> 00:13:39,860
the ECHL is really afforded the great
opportunity to see spots that I’ve never
183
00:13:39,860 –> 00:13:44,360
seen to rejoice cities that I really
really enjoyed and probably would have
184
00:13:44,360 –> 00:13:48,589
never gone to otherwise i think a
specific memory that kind of opens up
185
00:13:48,589 –> 00:13:54,230
into a broader spectrum of what the ECHL
is done for me and broaden my horizons
186
00:13:54,230 –> 00:13:58,279
yeah i know you said the pictures with
me hopefully you could maybe some that
187
00:13:58,279 –> 00:14:00,529
picture over and I could use it for the
website
188
00:14:00,529 –> 00:14:04,309
yeah not a problem so what are your
dreams for the future look like you know
189
00:14:04,309 –> 00:14:10,160
as a mentioned earlier i’m always
looking ahead looking for the next
190
00:14:10,160 –> 00:14:15,290
opportunity whether that’s within the
ECHL or another realm of sports aware
191
00:14:15,290 –> 00:14:19,339
that specifically it i don’t know
growing up I always thought I wanted to
192
00:14:19,339 –> 00:14:23,300
work for the NHL but you know I’m not
sure that’s that’s the case anymore i
193
00:14:23,300 –> 00:14:27,290
think i’d just need to look at the
opportunity that presents itself and
194
00:14:27,290 –> 00:14:27,589
what
195
00:14:27,590 –> 00:14:32,450
or anything it’s right for me on a host
of different levels not only on a career
196
00:14:32,450 –> 00:14:37,970
level but on a family level on a
geography level where it is what the
197
00:14:37,970 –> 00:14:43,670
fine commitment I you know that sports
can be a lot of hours but as you grow
198
00:14:43,670 –> 00:14:48,229
older you get a family and you have
commitments to them as well so so it’s a
199
00:14:48,230 –> 00:14:53,90
balancing act and you gotta find what’s
the the right fit for you and what may
200
00:14:53,90 –> 00:14:58,70
have been a right fit for me at 22 years
old may not be right for me
201
00:14:58,70 –> 00:15:02,780
30 years old so I just kinda see what
comes along and make a decision from
202
00:15:02,780 –> 00:15:06,290
there you’re still driving a long
distance to get the work every day in
203
00:15:06,290 –> 00:15:07,579
Princeton New Jersey
204
00:15:07,580 –> 00:15:14,90
yeah that’s that’s for certain look
about an hour 10 each one everyday so is
205
00:15:14,90 –> 00:15:15,920
there any last thoughts you’d like to
share
206
00:15:15,920 –> 00:15:20,900
you know I think we’ve touched on a lot
of higher points there and understand
207
00:15:20,900 –> 00:15:25,40
that the scope of your project years to
encourage people to focus on their
208
00:15:25,40 –> 00:15:29,360
dreams and I think that’s what you gotta
do you gotta kind of have it in the back
209
00:15:29,360 –> 00:15:34,370
of your mind what you want to do look at
the steps that you need to get there and
210
00:15:34,370 –> 00:15:36,530
start to take those steps
211
00:15:36,530 –> 00:15:41,30
nothing’s going to happen overnight by
any stretch of the means but if you do
212
00:15:41,30 –> 00:15:45,50
the right things and follow the steps
slowly in increments you’ll get to where
213
00:15:45,50 –> 00:15:50,180
you want to be in high school I decided
I wanted to be in the sports world and
214
00:15:50,180 –> 00:15:55,189
so I started researching it and found
where I wanted to go I got test scores
215
00:15:55,190 –> 00:16:00,470
to get me in and I proceeded down that
path once we got that left my foot in
216
00:16:00,470 –> 00:16:04,730
the door once I got in i realized i
wanted to further my education to
217
00:16:04,730 –> 00:16:10,700
further my career sound where to go when
two rockers worked hard got the degree
218
00:16:10,700 –> 00:16:14,480
in the the pieces necessary to advance
my career once again you know none of
219
00:16:14,480 –> 00:16:19,460
this just snap my fingers and in here
days it was having kind of an idea in
220
00:16:19,460 –> 00:16:23,420
the back of my mind where I wanted to go
what I wanted to do finding the steps
221
00:16:23,420 –> 00:16:27,349
and then completing the steps in small
increments and then before you know it a
222
00:16:27,350 –> 00:16:29,450
decade’s gone and here we are
223
