I’m Super Joe Pardo! And This is how we episode 10!
When it comes to microphones there are ton of them to choose from when looking to upgrade from a USB mic like the Audio-Technica ATR-2100. I personally decided to go with the Shure SM7B mic for a few different reasons. Mainly it had to do with it’s ability to not allow background noises into it. Which is great for me since I have an open air studio here at my house. So when someone is watching TV in another room, you won’t hear it in the recording. Especially with our first baby on the way, it is even more important to filter out all of the background noise. The Sm7B has been around a long time, and is even nicknamed the Thriller microphone. Because it is the mic that Michael Jackson used to record the most bought album of all time, Thriller.
The SM7B is also used in many broadcast studios all over the world. It comes with two different pop filters and has two different settings on the back. You can add bass boost to make your voice sound deeper and get that on air sound you hear on the radio. For $350 new and used for around $250 you can’t go wrong with this mic. But remember it is a XLR mic so you will need a way to plug in into your computer via a USB mixer or audio interface.
One last note, a lot of people go on about how this mic needs a pre-amp. Honestly I don’t know why. I use it without a pre amp into my Akai EIE. As well as connecting it straight into my Canon Vixia R500 with a XLR to 3.5mm adapter.
I want to know what mic you are using! Leave your thoughts in the comments below, also please like and share this video if you feel it was helpful.
